All valves that have multiple turn handwheels turn that handwheel in a clockwise direction to close the valve and a counter clockwise direction to open the valve.
Boiler sight glass valves open or closed.
Too much and you have surge problems.
This direction is determined while facing the valve handwheel.
Be positive that there is no pressure in the line before replacing your sight glass or you risk serious injury.
As to the direction of the valves humm.
Stick a wire into it and open any clog the inlet may be pluged.
Yes there are people who know.
But if you aren t there to look they can be closed.
Let the boiler cool down take the glass out again put a bucket under the valve and open the bottom sight glass valve.
If you can t keep water in the boiler without it leaking because of the broken sight glass then you can safely run the boiler.
You should see water move when you open a drain valve or add water and if your boiler is at a boil you should see water move up and down a bit.
At the same time if water comes out from the top of the sight glass fitting when the upper site glass valve is open then you ve overfilled the boiler.
In our sight glass replacement demonstration video we use a boiler that is not firing or hooked in.
Check to make sure the shut off valves are tightly closed or make sure your boiler is completely empty of pressure and water.
If the valves aren t open when you look you can t tell the water level.
The boiler sight glass is the window into what is going on in the inside of your boiler.
Both need to be open.
